Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como is situated in the region of Lombardy, Italy. It is the third largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, it's banks host enchanting villiages such as Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo and Menaggio. Here are possibilities for your trip:

  • Getting to Lake Como is enjoyable whichever transportation you choose. Flying into Milan makes Lake Como more accessible, yet it is easy to reach, especially by train, from wherever you are in Italy. If you choose to visit the area by car it is easiest to rent in Milan. If you choose to travel by train you have various options and can form your visit to Italy and Lake Como with this mode of transportation. The public bus transportation is also an option, the stops are easy to find, and it provides a relaxing and scenic way to see the Lake if you have the time.

  • Please note if catching the train for the day to Como you cannot book the Hydrofoil Ferry Tickets online, only in person. These are the fastest tickets for mode of transport to the various villages, although you can book the slower Ferry Ticket Option online for your trip. If available, choose to come through Varenna to catch either Ferry, it is faster and easier than the city of Como, especially if you're planning a day trip. Arriving from Milan Centrale to Varenna Esino is the easiest, and if you would like to visit Como you can still do so. One other option is to rent a boat and drive yourself or have a private driver take you around the lake!

  • Here are some favorite villages and sights to see while visiting Lake Como:

    • Bellagio: Located at the intersection of the three branches, Bellagio is Lake Como’s most famous village. It is a delightful little village with narrow, steep streets and stunning views of the lake. Make sure to stroll along the Lido and enjoy the view of the lake from this village. Sit down, and enjoy a delectable meal at Hotel Suisse. Bellagio is truly special, if possible plan to stay a couple of days and simply relax. Either way, stroll the streets and embrace the ambience of this charming village.

    • Tremezzo: The municipality of Tremezzo is a top tourist stop thanks to Villa Carlotta, a neoclassical residence sold in 1843 as a wedding present for Princess Charlotte of Prussia. Take in a visit to the mansion and its striking gardens.

    • Varenna: Situated between the lake and the mountain is the sweet little hamlet of Varenna which has walkways above the water with stairs that give grand views of the lake and the mountain.

    • Menaggio: Menaggio is a medieval town that is remarkably preserved with an old castle tourists can visit. There are breathtaking villas by the banks of the lake, which make for a very pleasant walk.

    • Como: Founded by the Romans in 196 BC, Como is a super popular destination. We recommend taking the funicular to Brunate for impressive views of the lake and the city of Como.

  • If you're ready to shop all of the areas of Lake Como listed will provide. There are lovely little stores in every town and village on the lake. The City of Como is full of shops, focusing on various products of fashion. Find stores along your easy walk from the Como train station to the ferry office, including, coffee shops, and restaurants.
